Improve accessibility with high slope
The urbanization and improvement project in the Barri del Castell was born from a working group called Acces_SOS.
Acces_SOS is a working group that connects international professional urban design studies. The object of his research and intervention is the public space and its degree of accessibility and use by the community. It develops urban strategies for the recovery and integration of areas with strong social degradation. It coordinates actions and responses through an experimental, multidisciplinary working method with direct participation with citizens.
The project develops a system for all the streets of the Barri del Castell, the pilot test started with the flattest street of all. The following streets are being developed in consecutive phases.
Built on the basis of the Barri del Castell accessibility improvement project, we have tried to blur the separation between cars and pedestrians as much as possible to create a 10km/h zone.
The continuous tobacco-colored flooring unifies the space, while the arrangement of the furniture and the application of signs of vitality break the linearity.
The arrangement of benches has been made compatible with the punctual stop for loading and unloading of residents, handrails have been fixed on the facades to prevent slipping, trees and vegetation have been planted to make the stay on the street become a desirable fact.
PROBLEMATICS
In 2009, we started working within the framework of the acces_SOS project, a research team on urban public space and its accessibility by all sectors of the population. We think that designing seamless, universal and no-cost accessibility is a matter of attitude. The aim was to define, through a citizen participation workshop, the characteristics that the streets of the Barri del Castell should have in order to recover their capacity as civic articulators. In this way, it was possible to detect the shortcomings and needs of the backbone of the neighborhood by focusing the study on the problems of accessibility and quality of public space.
Acces_SOS
Acces_sos proposes to expand the more diffuse concept of accessibility, assuming it as a value to start in order to restore the relations of the inhabitants and their metropolitan routines with the public space, going beyond the immediate identification accessibility = disabled = elimination of architectural barriers.
Accessibility as a predisposition of the anthropized space to be enjoyed, inhabited by all populations, of all age groups.
